Wilbur & Gussie is a British handbag brand created by childhood friends and London-based design duo Brett Tyne and Lucy Lyons. Merging elegance with edge and an unremitting commitment to quality, our designs are statement pieces crafted to add a refined wit and whimsy to your personal style.

Our Story

Brett was born in Nashville, Tennessee and moved to London at the age of nine, where she and Lucy became fast friends. Growing up in the 1980s and 90s, they were both instilled with a sense of rock ‘n’ roll and glamour from an early age. Although Brett returned to America to attend Duke University, she moved back to London upon graduating to pursue a career in film. Between projects, she explored her passion for designing and making jewellery, and sold her creations to boutiques on both sides of the pond.

Meanwhile, during an intended “gap year” prior to university, Lucy accepted a job in a fashion buying office and never looked back. This led to buying Accessories for a department store group and eventually the Disney Stores. With a mutual entrepreneurial spirit and a love of accessories, the two friends partnered up to create Wilbur & Gussie, naming the business after their childhood pets, who had remained in each other’s lives over the years. (Today, each new style of bag is named after a friend’s pet, in keeping with the brand’s namesakes).

Behind the bags

Wilbur & Gussie’s bags are made in Spain manufactured by a family-run company that has been in the business for more than twenty-five years. They are committed to supporting the British manufacturing industry and all leather products are made in England.

Their first collection, a whirl of silk and animal prints matched with elegant jewelled brooches brought to life an era of nostalgia blended with today’s red carpet looks. Further inspiration came from the leading ladies in their lives. “My grandmother was a huge influence,” says Brett. “She had an extraordinary collection of brooches which she kept on a pink satin pin-cushion on her dressing table. She was never afraid to wear bold jewellery. Her motto was ‘there is no such thing as too big’ I loved that about her!” Continuing to draw inspiration from the past but introducing a modern sensibility, the bags are collectable yet versatile.

In 2014, Lucy moved abroad and today the company is run by Brett, with Lucy staying on in an advisory role. The offices are based in South West London.
