Founded in 2006, Wilbur & Gussie is a quintessentially English handbag brand created by London design duo Brett Tyne and Lucy Lyons.
Inspired by eye-catching modern prints and fine jewellery, a Wilbur & Gussie handbag is the ultimate style statement. By using unique printed leathers, vintage jewelled brooches and a range of textiles designed in-house, Wilbur & Gussie's designs have become synonymous with British wit and elegance. With an emphasis on the exotic, Wilbur & Gussie’s collections of printed silk clutch bags are firm fixtures on the New York/London fashion circuit, while the brand’s new line of leather handbags brings a distinctive look to daytime.
Being a British company, Wilbur & Gussie is proud to support the manufacturing industry within England. Ultimately it is the company’s commitment to quality craftsmanship and creative detailing that lend the bags their unique aesthetic. Wilbur & Gussie opened its flagship store in London’s Marylebone in spring 2014.
Having grown up in London during the 1980s and 90s, founders Brett Tyne and Lucy Lyons were instilled with a sense of rock 'n' roll, punk and glamour from an early age. Their first collection, a whirl of silk and animal prints allied with elegant jewelled brooches brought to life an era of nostalgia blended with today's red-carpet-ready looks. Further inspiration came from the leading ladies in their lives. "My grandmother was a huge influence," says Brett. "She had a collection of antique brooches that she kept on a pink satin pin-cushion on her dressing table. One Christmas she gave me a pearl snail brooch and my sister a beautiful ring embellished with a squirrel. She was never afraid to wear bold jewellery. Her motto was 'there is no such thing as too big' and I think that's a great philosophy for life."
Behind the bags
Drawing on generations of intricate European needlework, Wilbur & Gussie's silk bags are made in Spain overseen by a family-run company that has been in the business more than 25 years. Wilbur & Gussie's founders are also committed to supporting the British manufacturing industry, therefore each leather bag is sampled and made in England.
