Brett Tyne and Lucy Lyons met at school in 1985 and in 2005, after very different careers in film production and buying, they founded Wilbur & Gussie.
When we started, there were not many companies designing elegant yet affordable evening bags. Inspired by eye-catching prints and fine jewellery, we put the two together and the core of Wilbur & Gussie was born. Over time, we have further developed our brand signature by moving into printed leathers and designing our own unique clasps. Our mission is to create playful and stylish bags that can transcend time.
Finding a name for a new business is never easy. As we were putting together our first collection, sitting amongst piles of silk swatches, we realised we had sourced an abundance of animal prints. After the ‘Charlie’ clutch bag was designed, we discovered an array of elegant jewelled animal brooches to pin on the front. We felt that they were the perfect finish for the bags. Once the collection was completed, we came up with the idea of using our pets’ names for the brand because we realised that animals would always play an integral role in the design aesthetic of our company.
Proud of our manufacturing
At Wilbur & Gussie we are committed to supporting the British manufacturing industry. Our leather and frame bags are all sampled and made in London. We work with individual craftsmen and women, as well as a family factory in the East End. Established in the 1960’s, it is one of the last remaining frame-makers in the country. We feel very fortunate to have found them!
Our silk bags are made in Spain by a family-run factory that has been in business for 27 years. They produce their own line of bags as well as manufacture for a small number of independent brands. They do all of our sampling in their main headquarters in Barcelona and our bulk orders are made in the South of Spain, in Alicante. From the time they receive our designs it usually takes 10-12 weeks to produce the bags.
